PSIRA Compliance Matters

What is the No 1 Red Flag in Security?
It’s that time of year again — the statutory PSIRA increase. Don’t fall victim to companies cutting corners and jeopardizing your security and your company's reputation. Each year on 1 March, the mandatory wage adjustments issued by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and the Main Collective Agreement come into effect. These increases are not optional — they are legally binding on all compliant security providers.
While most reputable companies adjust their pricing responsibly to remain compliant, this period often sees an increase in unrealistically low quotes from providers attempting to retain or win business by absorbing the increase improperly. Be cautious. If a guarding rate appears significantly lower than market-related or below what the statutory wage structure would support, it is a strong indicator that corners may be cut.
What this can mean in practice:
🛑Security officers may be paid below the legal minimum
🛑 Statutory contributions (UIF, COIDA, Health & Bargaining Council, leave provisions) may not be fully funded
🛑 Supervision and relief structures may be reduced
🛑 Staff turnover and site instability may increase
🛑 Overall service quality and risk exposure may rise

For clients, the impact is not only operational — it can also introduce legal and reputational risk. In certain circumstances, clients may face joint liability where labour laws are not properly observed.
A fully compliant guarding solution should always demonstrate:
🫡 Alignment with current PSIRA wage determinations
🫡 Proper statutory provisions built into the rate
🫡 Adequate supervision and management structure
🫡 Sustainable pricing that supports long-term service delivery
